Cantwell, Alaska. Tracy Petrikoff, 17, solitary and fierce, lives with her father Bill and her brother Scott in a run-down house on the outskirts of town. Since her mother Hannah, a renowned musher, vanished under mysterious circumstances, everything has gone wrong. Tracy struggles with uncontrollable fits of anger, long sleepless nights, and strange visions. She doesn’t yet realize she has inherited from her mother a gift that binds her deeply to the animals roaming Denali National Park.
Everything changes when Tracy saves Jesse during a hunting trip. That act seals the fate of both teenagers, and to survive the danger closing in on them, Tracy will have to learn to master her gift and find the balance between her animal instincts and her humanity.
