Tracy Petrikoff, a fierce and solitary 17-year-old, lives with her father Bill and her brother Scott in a run-down house on the outskirts of town. Ever since her mother Hannah — a renowned musher — vanished under mysterious circumstances, everything has fallen apart. Tracy struggles with uncontrollable fits of rage, long bouts of insomnia, and strange visions. She doesn't yet know that she has inherited a gift from her mother — a deep, primal connection to the animals roaming Denali National Park.

Everything changes when Tracy rescues Jesse, unconscious, during a hunting trip. Saving Jesse seals the fate of the two teenage girls, and to survive the danger that awaits them, Tracy will have to learn to control her gift and find balance between her animal instinct and her humanity.
